Challenge

A large metropolitan train station, serving thousands of commuters daily, was facing challenges with labour-intensive cleaning areas, which placed ongoing strain on site performance scores. High-traffic areas such as washrooms were a constant battle to maintain in terms of odour and cleanliness. Internal and external flooring, as well as station platforms, were regularly impacted by spills and chewing gum adhesion. In addition, the station’s glass canopies collected dust and grime faster than they could be cleaned, creating pressure on both manual labour and the use of heavy machinery and chemicals.

Challenges were further intensified by time-restricted cleaning schedules. Glazing could only be serviced during off-peak hours, and minimal disruption to passenger movement was required across all areas.

"The platforms and glass canopies are the first things our passengers see. Chewing gum, weathering, and streaky glass were difficult to stay ahead of, and the effort required was considerable."

Station Facilities Manager

Two main issues were identified:

  • Labour Intensity and Time Constraints: Cleaning porous paving and high-level glazing consumed most of the limited cleaning window. The labour required to remove just a single chewing gum marking was substantial, and the problem was continuous. This left little time for other priorities and led to frequent reliance on costly specialist equipment.

  • Surface Deterioration and Maintenance Costs: Porous platform paving was vulnerable to dirt and de-icing salts. Frequent pressure washing led to surface wear. Glazing surfaces quickly accumulated residue, reducing both visibility and visual appeal.

Solution

Nordic Chem began with a full site assessment to identify the areas under the most operational strain. These included:
• External platform paving
• Internal concourse flooring
• Washrooms
• Glass canopies and walls

Maintenance teams received in-person training and support to apply the Nordic Chem coating. Work was carried out during off-peak hours to avoid disruption. The goal was to reduce cleaning inputs while improving surface performance within existing timeframes.

Results

The treated areas became easier to maintain and stayed cleaner between cleans.
This led to:
• 107% increase in cleaning productivity (sqm cleaned/hour)
• £102,765 in annual contract savings, including labour, chemicals, and equipment hire

“Our platforms now resist dirt and chewing gum, and the glass needs far less attention. Odour in the washrooms has been eliminated. We can hit our targets more easily and staff feedback has been very positive.”

Head of Operations

The protective coating is helping preserve key assets while reducing daily workload and operational risk. Maintenance is now more consistent, efficient, and sustainable, improving working conditions and elevating the station’s overall appearance.
