Challenge

A large care home facility was facing mounting challenges maintaining hygiene across resident rooms and communal areas. Constant disinfecting of high-touch surfaces — including metal bed frames, door handles, and plastic furniture — was driving surface wear and increasing the rate of asset replacement.

Soft furnishings were particularly difficult to sanitise effectively, and the shaping of frames made thorough disinfection unreliable. Lower glazing standards and fading on vinyl flooring were also becoming a concern, as attention remained fixed on infection control.

"We were disinfecting constantly, but we still felt exposed to risks. The metal and plastic surfaces were taking a real hit, and replacements were happening more often than they should."

Facilities Manager

Two key issues emerged:

  • High Wear from Intensive Cleaning: Frequent chemical use on hard surfaces led to fading and deterioration. Plastic chairs and bed frames were degrading faster than budgeted due to constant wiping and harsh products.
  • Inconsistent Hygiene Assurance: Textiles and hard-to-clean surfaces presented an ongoing risk. Despite daily disinfection, ensuring full coverage on complex surfaces was difficult, and staff confidence remained low.

Solution

Nordic Chem carried out a full site evaluation to assess the most at-risk zones. Target areas included:
• Bedside rails and metal furniture
• Plastic seating and handrails
• Fabric furnishings
• Communal area glazing
• Vinyl and resin flooring

The coating was applied during scheduled maintenance windows, with in-house teams trained for safe and consistent application. This created a surface protection system that made daily cleaning easier and more effective, without the constant strain of deep disinfection routines.

Results

The results observed were the followings:
• 4,200 labour hours saved annually
• 91% productivity increase (sqm cleaned/hour)
• £28,600 in total annual contract savings
• 38% higher hygiene levels on treated surfaces (90-day average)

“Our surfaces now stay cleaner with less effort. The team works faster, and our assets are holding up far better than before. We feel more confident in both hygiene and appearance.”

Head of Operations

By reducing dependency on chemicals and improving surface resilience, the site saw measurable upgrades in hygiene standards, staff efficiency, and asset longevity — while reducing risk and overall cleaning burden.

Proven Results.

A hospital improving efficiency and hygiene standards.

Treating floors and washrooms delivered a yearly contract profit of £2,966, with 277 labour hours redistributed annually. Levels of mould, yeast and bacteria dropping from over 150 CFU/g to less than 1 CFU/g, with protection lasting over 25 days.

A care home requiring advanced hygiene control.

In a care home, Nordic Chem was tested on high-touch surfaces like handrails and visitor tables. ATP swab scores, initially at levels requiring attention (70-110), dropped to "clean" levels (0-30) post-treatment. These results were maintained for over 12 weeks, demonstrating long-lasting antimicrobial protection.
